What is a wiki?
A wiki is a webpage or collection of webpages that allow visitors to contribute or modify content. The power of a wiki comes from its use as a tool for collaboration. The word "Wiki" (
/wiːkiː/) is Hawaiian for "fast" implying that content can grow quickly through multiple contributing authors. The most recognized wiki is wikipedia - the online collaborative encyclopedia. In it's infancy wikipedia was seen as a poor, even dangerous, substitute for a print encyclopedia. However, because of the collaborative nature of the wiki, experts are continuously monitoring the content related to their field of expertise and adding content or correcting mal-content so that wikipedia is "fast" becoming one of the most current and expert sources of information on the web.
Why did SVCS choose to develop this wiki?
It seems that the technology available to students and teachers is evolving almost daily. First developed in the mid-1990's, wiki's are not a new technology, but the wiki as a communication tool in education is just beginning to come into it's own. Attend just about any educational technology conference and you are sure to hear multiple people discussing how they are using wikis with their students. According to Thomas' and Boysen's Taxonomy of Technology Use (1984), we progress to be technology users through five stages: Experiencing, Informing, Reinforcing, Integrating and Utilizing. So, it seems appropriate that if we are going to begin integrating and utilizing wiki's in our classrooms, we must first Experience them.
What will you find here?
At the MORIC Technology Heighten's Education (T.H.E.) Symposium IV, Jared Mader of EdTechInnovators, Inc presented a new taxonomy for technology use: Observing, Interacting, Producing, Developing and Applying. These terms are defined in his T.H.E. Symposium slideshow. It is our hope that through the information you find and contribute here, you will observe your fellow teachers employing new technologies, you will interact with those teachers and those technologies until you are comfortable producing a lesson with each. You will then see ways to develop integrated lessons that employ multiple technologies until you are fully comfortable selecting and applying technology for teaching in your classroom.
The folders that you will find on this wiki are: (feel free to add a folder, but be sure to describe it here)
- Audio and Podcasting - tools and techniques for working with audio including tips on using audio in applications that we are all comfortable with - like Word and Powerpoint.
- CPS - Sharing of CPS tips, files, etc.
- Free on the Web - websites, open source programs, plug-ins and more that will enrich your classroom.
- On the Desktop - A guide to the applications that we have purchased and that you will find installed on the computers throughout the building.
- SmartBoard - Tips, techniques, file sharing, Q&A on using SmartNotebook, SmartBoards and Airliner Tablets.
- Video - tools and techniques for employing video in your classroom, from streaming content to developing content to delivering content through video conferencing.
- Ways to Use a Projector - Your projector is a multi-media tool that can be used in so many ways. Here we will show you creative examples of using a projector with a multitude of software applications and hardware devices until, like some, you can't live without it.
Where to begin?
With the end in mind, of course! It is our hope that this wiki will become a comprehensive guide and record of technology use in Stockbridge Valley CSD. As a reader, we hope you find a new technology that you wish to explore in the future. As a contributor, we hope you will share your best tips on using a specific technology, or one lesson that you have developed that integrates that technology either for teaching or learning. When we are finished, we anticipate that the contributions will evolve from "How Do You?" to "How You Do!" and then from "I" statements to "my students" statements.

Looks Interesting. Can we upload some of the vast examples we had during the HP grant?
